Terrace decks at the Forsthaus, 31. Jul 2025

New seating areas at the Old Forest House. To allow you to enjoy our beautiful gardens even more, we’ve been working hard in recent weeks and have created new terrace decks from local wood. Please take a seat and enjoy the peace and quiet and our wonderful views.

Baking bread in the Old Forest House, 19. Feb 2025

From now on, our guests can enjoy our freshly baked bread from the wood-fired oven. (Almost) every Friday around 4:00 PM, you’ll find oven-fresh bread and rolls here at our forest house. All our breads are characterized by a long dough fermentation process, resulting in wonderful aroma, long freshness, and a good size. Since we only bake according to demand and capacities are limited, we kindly ask you to place your order with Sabine or Martin by Thursday at the latest. You can then pick up your order from us at the forest house on Friday. Currently, we offer the following breads/rolls: Spiegelhütte Farm Loaf (own rye sourdough, wheat) Alpen Farm Bread (rye mixed bread; own rye sourdough with Alpine spices) King Ludwig Bread (spelt; own rye sourdough) Sylt Bread (wheat flour, own rye sourdough) Alm Rolls (lauge rolls; wheat) All breads and rolls are made with regional organic flour from Meyer Mühle Landshut. For bread and rolls, we appreciate a donation to cover material costs and wood. From 3:00 PM, you are warmly welcome in our “Baking Madness Hut” in Spiegelhütte, where you can watch the bread being loaded and baked. Refreshments are available in our refrigerator behind the hut. The bread is usually ready around 4:00 PM.

When the snow is missing..., 11. Feb 2024

Even though winter has let us down a little this year and skiing and sledding are currently only possible on the Großer Arber, the forest has so much to offer. Today, we enjoyed a beautiful hike that wouldn’t have been possible with snow. The Waldschnepfe circular trail, starting and finishing at the Buchenau hiking car park. Gentle inclines through an almost mystical forest; streams alongside the path, and some scrambling over fallen trees – still snow patches at the top, showing that winter isn’t quite gone yet. All of this on completely secluded trails. A truly special nature experience.

Winter in the Forest, 5. Feb 2023

It took a long time for winter to arrive here. But now it’s here with force and all its beauty.

Naturally – our water, 26. Apr 2022

Our water comes from our forest, making it very local and of excellent quality. Filtered through the Bavarian Forest granite, our water is not only very clean and pure but also very low in lime and simply delicious in taste (mineral water quality). As our guests, you can therefore safely do without buying mineral water and enjoy the cool water straight from the tap. For those who prefer it a little more sparkling, we have installed sparkling water makers (SodaStream) in the apartments. The carbon dioxide cartridges are provided by us and are, of course, included in the price of the apartment rental. We hope to offer our guests not only great water but also to make a small contribution to waste reduction. The picture shows the spring in Spiegelhütte. It is located on the path from our house to the Wildgehege Scheuereck. The spring from the Zollhaus is located in the primeval forest area of Mittelsteighütte. Here we even have our own water association as a village that takes care of the spring; in Spiegelhütte, the spring is looked after by Waldwasser. Cheers

The Old Forest House will become climate neutral., 11. Mar 2022

Yesterday, we signed the contract for the installation of a state-of-the-art pellet central heating system. We anticipate that from this summer onwards, the forest house will also be climate-neutral thanks to 100% electricity from renewable sources and a heating system that generates warmth from compressed wood waste. This will allow us to heat our houses in a future-proof, environmentally friendly, and, above all, cost-effective way for years to come.

Lynx tracks behind the customs house?, 24. Feb 2022

The lynx is certainly one of the most fascinating animals in the Bavarian Forest. Unfortunately, sightings are very rare. (Our daughter once had a chance sighting from the car a few years ago.) Currently, we’ve discovered tracks in the forest behind the customs house that could well belong to a lynx. Less than 100m from the house, a beautiful track stretched through the fresh snow. As we’re not track experts and can only compare the tracks with images from the internet, there’s a bit of uncertainty whether a lynx has actually looked at our lovely customs house. It's certainly exciting, though.

Between the years, 29. Dec 2021

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is time,

Because when you give your time to another person,

you share a piece of your life with them.

This saying adorns our Christmas card this year. We’ve never felt so strongly that the time we give to each other, the time we spend together, is precious. Perhaps because we haven’t experienced before that it was practically forbidden for us to be together.

All the more, we enjoyed the moments when we could be with our family. We especially liked the encounters with them – our guests – some already familiar, almost friends who come to visit, some experiencing this place for the first time, excited about what awaits them. Even in these encounters, the time they want and need to give to each other and to nature was a recurring theme. To unwind and, this year more than ever, to disconnect was important to them.

They gave themselves and their loved ones this time, enabling encounters. Encounters with nature, the forest, and with people.

We thank you for the encounters with you, for your loyalty and your trust in us and our beautiful homes.

We look forward to numerous inspiring encounters next year with you, our guests, and to time with family.

Yours, Sabine Naß and Martin Bickel

The old workshop is finished., 28. Oct 2021

Our project for 2021 is (finally) complete. With a lot of effort and self-built work – complemented by the excellent work of skilled craftsmen – our “Oide Werkstood,” the new place to celebrate and enjoy convivial gatherings in the Old Customs House, is finished.

The “favorite place” of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather – his workshop – has been transformed into a cozy hut with a magnificent view of the primeval forest. Equipped with a wood-fired stove, dishes, a coffee machine, and a large seating area, the Oide Werkstood offers a comfortable space to settle in and relax, to chat and linger, to eat and drink. It is available to all our guests – exclusively by reservation – free of charge.

Apartments Wildbach and Schildelau now also with fireplaces, 25. Jun 2021

Our Wildbach and Schindelau apartments now also have cozy fireplaces in the living rooms. The season isn’t quite right for them yet, and we’re all enjoying the lovely summer weather. Nevertheless, even in summer, the occasional rainy day invites you to cozy up in front of a beautiful fireplace. In addition to our large tile stove in the Fahnenriegel apartment, we can now offer this pleasure to all guests in the two "smaller" apartments as well. Firewood for the stoves is readily available in front of the house. Enjoy!

Our new playground, 31. May 2021

Actually, the forest behind our house is already a huge adventure playground with natural tree hollows, a stream as a water play area, mysterious thickets for hiding, and so much more. Especially for the little ones, we have now built a new adventure playground behind the house that invites you to play and have fun.

Hopefully back for you soon, 10. May 2021

According to plans by the Bavarian State Government, overnight stays for tourism purposes can be enjoyed again from May 21st, provided the incidence rate in the respective district remains stably below 100. Currently (May 10th), this rate in the Regen district, to which we belong, is 107.5. We are confident that we will be below 100 by May 21st and can then reopen our holiday apartments for you. The Ministry of Health is currently developing the detailed regulations for the hygiene concept. We will, of course, inform our guests as soon as we have this information. You can find the current status of the Corona regulations in the Regen district via this link: Current Corona Regulations Regen District

Action: "No Litter in the Forest" by the Eifel and Bavarian Forest National Parks, 7. Apr 2021

Help us ensure that these urban dwellers don’t spread too far into our beautiful forest. We wholeheartedly support this initiative by the National Parks! About the National Park’s initiative

Forsthaus awarded the Traveller Review Award by Booking.com again, 5. Feb 2021

Thanks to the very positive guest feedback on Booking.com, our Old Forest House has once again been awarded the Traveller Award. We are delighted by this recognition. Even more importantly, of course, we are pleased that you, our guests, feel completely at home with us. To ensure this continues, we used the time during lockdown to add further touches of comfort around our beautiful house. We’ve already introduced our sauna. New to us is our wood-fired oven for delicious homemade bread or a good pizza. Also providing culinary delights is an electrically heated tart oven in our wonderful "Baking Madness" hut.

The sauna in the garden is ready., 6. Dec 2020

Admittedly, the sauna was actually supposed to be operational back in 2018. But what takes time...

We used November to build the barrel sauna. The result is more than impressive. A modern sauna with a fantastic atmosphere. And after sweating, rubbing off with the freshly fallen snow, sitting outside and watching the moon rise over our forest – that’s something truly special.

Our mountain hut is (almost) finished, 6. Dec 2020

It’s true that Corona has had (at least a little) positive impact. We were able to use the time to really push forward with our "Mountain Hut" project. What started as a pavilion on the slope has become a beautiful hut with a fireplace and cozy sheepskins – perfect for celebrating, chatting, making music, grilling, or simply being together. Here are some festive impressions.

New website, 1. Oct 2020

As you can see, we have a new website live today! Why not try out our new booking system.

Update to our cancellation policy, 19. Apr 2020

Dear Guests, To ensure you can relax and book your vacation with us (as much as possible in these times), we have amended our cancellation terms. The deposit, which would normally be retained as a cancellation fee if you cancel within 60 days of arrival, will be fully refunded if a vacation stay is not permitted due to legal regulations. Alternatively, we are of course happy to allow you to keep the deposit for a later vacation. This means that if the current travel restrictions remain in place until your planned vacation, you don’t need to worry about not getting your money back. As we anticipate high demand for holidays in Germany this year, we recommend you book now without risk. By the way: Naturally, our holiday apartments are professionally and thoroughly cleaned after each stay, currently also with disinfectants suitable for eliminating the coronavirus.

14.02.2020 Fire in our beautiful customs house, 14. Feb 2020

On Valentine's Day, a fire broke out in our Siebenschläfer penthouse apartment. Triggered by a gas explosion, our guests bravely and quickly extinguished the fire with fire extinguishers, after which the fire department was called and professionally and carefully took over, extinguishing the remainder and ventilating the smoky apartment. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for this. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

The smoke and soot have caused quite extensive damage, so the apartment is currently uninhabitable. However, we hope that all work will be completed in 3-4 months and the apartment will shine in new splendor. All other apartments in the building are completely undamaged and can continue to be booked as usual.

Autumn in the Forest, 28. Oct 2019

Our summer season is drawing to a close, and our forest is showing its beautiful side once again. Vibrant colors abound, and the air is fresh and clear. Mushrooms are sprouting from the ground, and red deer (as every year) wander directly into the garden to enjoy the last of the fruits. We thank all our guests for the wonderful time they had in spring and summer this year. We have very much enjoyed being your hosts. We will be closed until Christmas – also to allow us to renovate a little and to ensure everything is in perfect order for you. We look forward to a wonderful winter with our guests.

Inauguration of our Old Forest House, 16. Sep 2019

With family, friends, the Spiegelhütte village association, and lots of music, we joyfully inaugurated our Old Forest House. We, and our guests alike, were unanimously of the opinion: “It’s become wonderful.”

The Old Forest House is now officially open., 16. Sep 2019

After almost nine months of construction, our fourth apartment, the family apartment, is finally complete. This marks the completion of our “retirement home” as well as the culmination of a great deal of effort to finish the house, so we’ve invited our family, friends, guests, and the entire village to a large celebration. We were especially delighted that, in addition to the companies that renovated our beautiful forest house, the chimney sweeps also came to wish us good luck.
